From Shearing to Showroom
Perhaps you have seen a beautiful pattern but have a different color palette in mind, or have found your dream rug but the dimensions do not work for your space. Maybe you simply have a vision that you long to capture and execute, or maybe you have an atypical project to create something that simply does not yet exist. King’s House Oriental Rugs is proud to offer custom design and commissioned rugs services to our clients.
Once we have selected the pattern, dimensions, colors and materials for your rug, the truly spectacular process begins in Central Anatolia with shearing the very sheep whose wool will become part of your heirloom Oriental rug. The wool travels to another small village where it is washed, spun and dyed before making its way to the weavery in yet another village.
It can take up to three or four months to weave your commissioned rug, a relatively fast turnaround for a commissioned and hand woven piece. We work with the most skilled weavers who have devoted their lives to creating these one of a kind masterpieces, learning their art via oral tradition that is passed down through the generations of women in the family.
With regular visits to our master artisans in Turkey and Nepal, we not only oversee the high quality of each process, we also document it all in photographs to create an heirloom bound book for you to relish and pass down through your family alongside your beautiful rug.
Working closely alongside both the client and the artisans, we ensure that the completed piece is exactly to your liking with regular updates throughout the process on the progress of your one of a kind rug.
“My client and I have worked closely with Kings House Oriental Rugs to custom design a hand-woven rug that meets the color scheme and character of our space. Christin is a joy to work with and extremely knowledgeable about the history, care-of, and design of fine woven fiber arts. I look forward to working with her again on our next project.” Denise Arnold, Chicago, Architect and Urban Designer

- This gorgeous Ghiordes runner was originally made in Central Turkey in the mid to late 1800’s. This carpet is actually a fragment of a much larger rug that had sustained too much damage to be restored. This one section in great condition, runs the entire length of the original rug with no seams or repair. (pictured above, large image)
- The photo above shows one of our talented artisans is weaving a strike-off for a client’s custom rug. In the custom ordering process, our weavers create a small section (strike-off) of the final rug to give us an idea of the color, texture and scale of the pattern. A strike-off is the most accurate representation of the color and weave used in a one-of-a kind rug. Read more about our King’s House custom line. (above, first small image)
