Spring Cleaning: 7 Steps to a Fresh + Beautiful Oriental Rug

Posted in: Rug Care & Restoration

Accidents happen. Whether your children spill milk, the family pet has an accident, your home floods or simply from years of normal wear and tear – your oriental carpet will need a professional cleaning at some point. We offer specialized services for the maintenance of your Oriental rugs, including USPAP-certified appraisals, cleaning, restoration and preventive care for all kinds of carpets. We recommend cleaning your rug every 1- 3 years for general maintenance. King’s House Oriental Rugs also offers pickup and delivery.

We offer several different methods of cleaning, including full immersion soaking and dry cleaning. Listed below is a basic guideline of the steps involved in cleaning every rug.

1. PRE-INSPECTION

Each area of the rug is inspected for damage and soil. The rug is then photographed and tagged with your work order.

2. DUSTING

Our Rug Badger technology removes the dry heavy damaging soil and sediments from area rugs. Harnessing over 40,000 harmonic vibrations per minute, the Rug Badger will vibrate out even the most stubborn soil and sediments caught deep in fibers of the rug. This process, while highly effective, is actually very gentle and can be used on fragile antique carpets.

3. DYE BLEED TEST

The dyes for your rug are then tested for colorfastness. A 24 hour test for dye run is done on each color. If there is potential for the colors to run, the washing process is adjusted so that the dye transfer will not occur.

4. DECONTAMINATION BATH (IF APPLICABLE)

The rug is soaked for a certain length of time, depending on how much surface soil and spotting needs to be gently worked out and rinsed from the rug’s fibers. Odor sources and contamination such as urine, mold, mildew or insect infestations dictate the use of appropriate treatments and procedures. This total submersion method is the only 100% guaranteed method to remove pet urine. The decontamination process is essential for the protection and preservation of all natural fiber rugs.

5. WASH  (IF APPLICABLE)

Expert hand washing in a submersion bath assures you that a complete cleaning is being performed. Our wash pit acts as a river with a constant flow of clean, soft water as we clean and deodorize the rug with a special brush and neutral PH shampoo. The dirt and contaminants are flowing out of the rug and down the drain as new fresh water is constantly running over the rug during this process.

6. DRY

The importance of speed and efficiency during drying is achieved in our controlled atmosphere drying room. A combination of heat, dehumidification and air circulation is used to enhance drying.

7. POST DETAILING

Fringes are then detailed and specialty spot and stain removal is performed. The rug is given a final grooming with a horsehair brush.
