Before and After: 1890 Antique Oushak that needed some love
We are always searching for beautiful usak carpets, especially the rare antique ones. Sometimes the beautiful usaks we find need some love and care to return to their original beauty and some like this one need some restoration as well as some altering to become a beautiful and useful carpet again for the next owner.
We found this oushak in Central Anatolia earlier this year on a buying trip. I was intrigued by the scale of the pattern, colors and its large size. There were some obvious issues regarding the condition of the edges and borders of this oushak. We asked our expert repair and restoration people in Turkey to have a look at it and see what possibilities we had for rescuing this carpet.
You can see in this photo we are discussing the different options. We decided to rebuild the edges enough to allow the medallion and corner design to remain centered and take off the outer borders that were in such bad repair. We liked the modern edge removing the outer borders allowed this antique oushak. (Circa 1890) The sections of the rug that needed to be repiled were minimal and of course our restoration team has the most gorgeous selection of hand dyed wool to customize the perfect match to the antique yarns. By removing the border we not only gave the oushak a more modern feel but we kept the restoration work cost friendly.
You can see the care it requires even in the most minor repairs to ensure that the proper wool and colors are used in any kashmiring or repiling project. I make certain that we hand select all of the yarns used while we are in Turkey.
Here are some photos of this gorgeous oushak brought back to life with a little love and care from our team of experts:
